An overview on Mulkraj Raj Anand's Coolie
Mulk Raj Anand's "Coolie " was first published in 1936 and is considered as a land mark work in Indian literature. It is written in picaresque and episodic novel.
The story follows the life of a young boy named Munoo, who is orphaned at aa young age and forced to work as a coolie , or a manual laborer to survive. Through munoo's experiences, Anand exposes the harsh realities of life for the lower class in British - ruled india.The novel sheds light on the exploitation and mistreatment of coolies in various industries, highlighting the oppressive conditions under which they work and the systemic injustice they face. The only relation between all the episodes is munoo and he is the one who takes part in all of them. All the materials present in the novel has been provided with unity and forum. The events may not have a logical unity but they have a thematic unity .
The novel explores the theme of poverty, social injustice, capitalism, and the struggles for dignity in the face of adversity. Anand's writing is known for its social realism and poignant portrayal of the human condition. The novel condemned the social , economic and cultural impact of more than two centuries of British occupation and indicted India's own rigid caste system ,which had long seperated it's citizens into groups based on their work status and their ethnicity. He captures the struggles and hardships faced by munoo and his fellow coolies with compassion and empathy, shining a light on the resilience and strength of those marginalized society.
